"The Monkeys Paw" essay

Not many people get the chance to make three wishes. Many people would just blurt out any random answer and some people would think about it. Well in W.W Jacobs' "The Monkeys Paw", he teaches his readers that they should always be careful what they wish for. To convey this message, he uses foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is when an author forewarns of something that will happen later in the story.

The story "The Monkeys Paw" has several examples of foreshadowing. One example is when Sergeant Major Morris tells the family about the last man who used the monkeys paw to make a wish. Jacobs says "The first man had his wishes, yes, I don't know what the first two were but the third was for death"(Pg.48). The man's first two wishes must have been so terrible and had such bad consequences that the man could no longer live. This is foreshadowing that when someone in the White family makes a wish, their wish will have bad consequences. This relates to the authors theme because the man who made the wishes must have not though about the consequences that would come with them.

Another example is when Sergeant Major Morris tries to throw the monkeys paw into the fire, but Mr. White stops him. Jacobs says "Better let it burn" "If you don't want it Morris, give it to me" (Pg. 49). This is hinting that Mr. White does want to make a wish with the monkeys paw. If he did not want to make a wish, he would have just let the paw burn in the fire. If Mr. White wishes, he and his family will have bad consequences. This relates to the theme because Mr. White did not think before saving the monkeys paw.

One more example of foreshadowing is when Herbert, the Whites' son, says he does not see the 200 pounds that his father just wished for. Jacobs says "Well I don't see the money"(Pg. 49). This is foreshadowing that the son will eventually see the money in some way. As you read further in the story, you realize that he is foreshadowing his own death. This relates to the theme of the story because Herbert does not think about how he could see the money. He does not realize that seeing the money will result in his own death.

The author, W.W Jacobs, is trying to convey his message that you should be careful what you wish for. Sometimes you wish for something before thinking about it, especially when you are mad. Sometimes you should just let fate decide someone's future. In "The Monkeys Paw", Mr. White did not want anything bad to happen to his family when he made his wishes, but he was warned by Sergeant Major Morris not to make any wishes. My making the wish, Mr. White messed with fate and the consequences of this one wish completely changed his and his family's life.  And that is the theme of "The Monkeys Paw".

My Hero!!!

As most people know, I love animals. I hate peopole who abuse animals. So my heroes are those awesome people who work hard every day to save animals suffering from animal cruelty. These people include vetenarians, animal cops, and animal activists.

Each day, animals are abused by their owners for no reason. Many animals form anger problems from their abuse and usually get put down or killed by their owner. Some people neglect their pets and do not feed them or care for them. Most of those animals become malnourished and eventually have to be put down or die on their own. The people that fight animal cruelty realy do inspire me. I have wanted to work with animals my whole life. Being an amimal cop is a dangerous job because you have to deal with sometimes dangerous animals and also have to deal with dangerous people. They often put their lives in danger and that is waht inspires me. This is soething i might like to do when i am older and these people have inspired me to do that.

Fishing is another form of animal cruelty. Many dolphins are killed in Japan. These dolphins are chased in order to bring them together in shallow water. Upon reaching the shallow water, these dolphins are brutally killed and in such great numbers that the water water turns red.  Many kinds of whales are also becomming extinct because of fishing. They are becoming extinct because people have been killing them and selling their meat. It is now against the law to kill whales for food anywhere in the world, but Japan is getting around this law by claiming that they are killing whales to study them. Even though the people who fight this are voulenteers, they still are putting themselves in dangerous spots. This is why they inspire me.

I am completely againsted animal cruelty and am inspired by people who try to fight it. When i am older i want to work with animals to stop animal cruelty. I hope to be like the people who save and protect animals every day. Each and every one of them inspire me to work harder in school so that i can go to college and have a carreer.

If money were no object.....

What i learned from this project is that you should do what you want to do. You should not pick a job for how much money it will give you, you sould do what is fun and makes you happy.

If i had no electricity....

If i had no electricity, I would have to give up a lot of things. I would have to give up my phone, computer, all lights, t.v and so  much more. Of course, i would miss all of those things, but there are two things i would miss the most. I would miss my snake George and my gecko Charlie.

Since these two animals are reptiles, they require heat. They are called ectotherms.  In the wild, they live in the desert because the desert is warm and provides them with heat. My gecko is from pakistan and my snake is from arizona. Their heat comes from heat lamps and/or heat mats in captivity. These two things run on electricity. If there was no electricity, i could not provide them with any heat.

If i had to give up my pets, i would be so extremely sad. I've never met another girl with a snake(im cool). My pets are like dogs to me, their my best friends. Even though my snake is extremely mean and bites me all the time, i would still miss him. That is what i would miss if i had no electricity. :)

My favorite book

My favorite book is "Diary of anne frank".Most people have heard her story, but the book goes into detail and explains her life and struggles. It also tells what most jews went through in that time period. The author of this book is of course Anne Frank.

Anne frank was born June 12th, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. Her parents were Otto and Edith Frank. Anne lived with her parents and her sister Margot. The germans began to concentrate the jews in 1942, anne was 13. The franks were forced to go into hiding in the attic of Ottos workplace. After going into hiding, Herman, Aguste and Peter Van Pels went into hiding with them. The german police eventually found everyone living in the attic August 4th, 1944. Annes father Otto was the only person to survive the war.

In hiding, Anne kept a diary. She wrote all about her fears, hopes, and expirences. She also wrote about her love life with peter. Her book was published after the war was over. The book goes over annes whole life and is very popular all over the world. I really loved this book because it is in the point of view of someone who went through all of this. The book is very sad and i would definetely suggest reading it.

if i could change anything.....

If i could change anything, i really would not want to change anything important, but there is one small thing i would want to change. Instead of getting a king snake, i would have rather gotten a ball python. This would really only affect myself.

Ball pythons are much more nice and a lot more pretty. My snake bites me whenever i go to pick him up, where as ball pythons are very docile and only bite when they feel very threatened. They also dont mind being held as much and they dont get as big as the king snakes. They only get about 4 -5 feet long. Ball pythons are for more advanced reptile owners because they are a lot stronger and they can easily hurt you by constricting you. They also have sharper teeth and can easily draw blood.

Although this is not something very important, it is something that i wish i would have done differently. It is not something i can go back and change. Hopefully in the future i can get a ball python, but my mom probably will never let me get another snake because she is so affraid of the one i have now. I love all reptiles and i still love my king snake george, but i wish i would have gotten a ball python. :)

Gymnastics/Cheerleading..............My favorite hobby!

My favorite hobby is gymnastics! Gymnastics is something i live to do. It is also a great excersize, it is great for building arm and leg muscles. It is something i love to do on my free time.

Gymnastics is a dangerous sport. In the past, i have pulled my hamstring in my leg, i have twisted my wrist, thrown out my back, and sprained my ankle. Also, i have landed on my head, butt and back many times. Those are just the perks of basically throwing at the ground. Fortunatly, i have never seriously injured myself doing gymnastics, but it is still very dangerous and i ALWAYS stretch before doing anything.

I got started doing gymnastics because i took gymnastics class. I was the most skilled five year old in the class. After I took the gymnastics class, i got started in cheerleading. Cheerleading was very fun for me and i found that i was very good at it. After a year in cheerleading, i was voted to be the cheerleading captin. That was something that i realy enjoyed. In cheerleading, i learned more advanced moves like front and back walkovers, one handed round-off, and perfected my front splits and back-bend.

Even though i do not take gymnastics classes anymore, i am teaching my little cousin how to do some tricks and she is on her way to becomming a cheerleader! For me, Gymnastics and cheerleading are by far my favorite hobbies and they are something i will always continue to do! :))

My favorite music! KATY PERRY!!!!!!!

I LOVE MUSIC!! I listen to it all the time. When i am in a bad mood or when i am just bored, i will always listen to music. I do not realy like slow music because it is boring. I usually listen to pop music like Carly Rae Jepson, One Direction, Taylor Swift, and Neon Trees, but there is one person in particular that i love to listen to all the time. KATY  PERRY!!!!!

I love Katy Perry for many reasons. She is an amazing artist. She writes her music off of the expirences she has gone through or what she is going through. Her music is inspirational for everyone. She mostly writes about love or relationship things. That is something that everyone goes through. Everyone can relate to what she sings about.

My favorite sone of Katy Perry is "Firework". In the song it says "Do you ever feel like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind wanting to start again? Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin, like a house of  cards, one blow from caving in?". Then it says "You've just gotta ignite the light, just own the night like the 4th of July". These lyrics are insisting that when you feel like no one likes or wants you, you just need to know that there are people out there that can be you friend, you just need to keep trying. That is why i realy like Katy Perrys music! :D

Should the government provide day care for working parents? YES!

I completely think that the government should provide daycare for the children of working parents. If you asked a group of  people what they thought about this, many of them would most likely say no because it is wasting money and jobs, but i believe it is important to provide for the parents. Many people can not  get jobs because they have to watch thir children all the time.

Many working parents can not afford daycare. If the parents did not have the day care, they probably could not work. One or both parents would have to stay home to watch the kids. Especially single parents. Single parents might not have anyone to watch their kids while they work.

Most people say the government should not provide daycare for working parents because if they can not afford kids, they should not have them, but some people do not expect kids and people make mistakes. Some people have kids and then loose their jobs because they can not work and take care of their children. That is why i believe the government should provide day care for working parents.

What i value the most!

What do i value the most? No i do not value something simple like books or food, but i value something that some people would find silly. Actually, i value my pets.

I have grown up with pets. I have owned everyting from rabbits, hampsters and birds, to snakes, lizards and gerbils. My pets are everything to me. They are something i find very irreplacable. You may think i could just go and buy another pet, but the personality would not be the same. For example, when i hold my snake, he always wraps himself around my fingers, but most other snakes would just squirm around and try to escape. If i lost any one of my pets, i would be devistated.

Now you may be asking...Why do i value my pets so much. Well there are many reasons that i value my pets. One reason is because they will never talk back to me. Another reason is because when i am sad, i can hold them and and look into their cute little faces. The last and most favored reason is because when i am mad at my mom, i can just put my snake on her and scare her and make her scream.

And those are the reasons i love my pets!! :)

White water rafting on vacation!

This summer while i was on vacation, i did many fun things. But by far, the most fun and adventurous thing i did not only over the summer, but ever, was white water rafting. White water rafting for most people is too risky and dangerous, but for me, it was the best thing i have ever done.

Before going white water rafting, our raft group had to listen to our instructor for about an hour because he had to tell us about all of the rules and everything to do in case of emergency. Then we suited up in our life jackets and helmets, grabbed our paddles, then headed towards the river. I was very nurvous before we got into the river.

We put our boats in the river and then got in the raft. The water was freezing and it was also raining, but once we started going on the river, i totally forgot that i was shivering and freezing. When we were about 10 minutes into the river, we got into some level 3 rapids(very fast and dangerous rapids). At some moments, i almost fell out of the raft, but i stayed in the whole time. When we finished white ater rafting, we got to go swimming in the river. IT was very fun. For me, white water rafting was the most fun thing i have ever done and i would most definantly do it again.

White Water Rafting

SAM

Yosemite Sam
short-tempered opponent mostly of bugs bunny,
face as red as a stop sign,
small red haired man, very undermining,
an extremely grouchy, gunslinging buffoon,
is the infamous charector from the famous cartoon, looney tunes.

Sam I Am
the silly charector from the mind of Dr. Suess,
he most definantly likes green eggs and ham,
he will not cease following his annoyed friend,
he will eat anything, anywhere, at anytime,
he is an annoying, ramunctious charector.

Samantha
the american house wife who is also a witch,
famous for her slight twitch of the nose,
she married a mortal man hoping for a regular life and a family,
when all along she was just a bewitched housewife.

Myself, SAM
i am not short-tempered, grouchy, or garrish,
i do not eat green eggs and ham or constantly pester people,
and i am definantly not a witch,
my name means "Listener", but that is definantly not me,
i am myself.
a hard working, competitive, smart, sometimes shy, beautiful, animal loving girl,
i am always Myself, SAM

my rule

My rule is to treat others as they treat you.

Most people think that you should always be nice to others no matter what, but for me, i am going to treat you the same way you treat me. For example, if i was at a grocery store in an asile and some one was trying to get past me, i would move if they said "excuse me". But if that person were to say "move", i would stay where i was.

I live by my rule and i will never change.
